Alliances in Chile and Argentina

Client: Lundin Mining

WE UNDERSTAND

Lundin Mining aims to establish itself as a key player in the Chilean mining industry, operating Minera Candelaria in the Third Region. In 2023, it acquired Caserones, and in 2024, it partnered with BHP to strengthen its presence in Chile and Argentina, developing the Vicuña District in Atacama. These investment decisions were made in the context of a sinkhole at the Alcaparrosa Mine, a subsidiary of Candelaria.

WE IDEATE

To achieve its strategic goals, we organized extensive discussions with regional and central authorities and supported Lundin’s on-site engagement to demonstrate its commitment to investing in Chile, even amid the critical context of the mining royalty debate.

For the Chile-Argentina Plan, we facilitated talks with key authorities from both countries, highlighting the Filo del Sol and Josemaría projects, which strengthen Lundin’s position as a global leader and place Argentina on the global mining map.

The importance of the Vicuña District for the Canadian mining company led to a much-anticipated meeting between Lundin Mining executives and Argentina’s President, Javier Milei, during his visit to Chile. This took place at a private GasAndes event on August 8, 2024, at the Mandarin Hotel. The meeting was made possible after extensive negotiations by Simplicity with the Argentine president’s cabinet.

WE SOLVE

We took on Lundin’s aspiration to move towards a comprehensive strategy for its operations in Chile. This involved giving it a more prominent role as the parent company and positioning it as a relevant mining group. To achieve this, we developed a workshop attended by senior executives from the three companies, with the aim of collaboratively working on a shared diagnosis. This was the beginning of an initial effort to align communications and public affairs.

We delivered a presentation outlining a diagnosis and strategy aimed at laying the groundwork for comprehensive work by Lundin and its subsidiaries in Chile, as well as the future projects to be developed in Argentina.
